Jamie is employed by our in-house training organisation R-Training (www.rtraining.co.uk) based in Leicestershire. Jamie works as part of a team of trainers who deliver a variety of training programmes, including induction training centred on the care certificate, mandatory refresher training and contributes to the development of new training packages which are offered across the company to upskill staff - an example of this is the design of a first aider instructor course.
R-Training also offers the opportunity for external organisations to engage with their training delivery, so a small part of his role is to conduct business development. The role is incredibly diverse and involves continuous development of existing training sessions, development of new materials, advertisement and marketing of the training department. Jamie must work closely with the registered managers of each site as well as colleagues across senior management and the training team.
Jamie’s concurrent role within the Group sees him have responsibilities as the First Aid Lead and Designated Resuscitation Officer, for which his responsibilities include:
Co-ordinating teaching and training of staff in resuscitation/first aid skills, liaison with sites for drills and simulation exercises, action planning and risk assessing viability/ effectiveness of site/ staff in carrying attempts at resuscitation, oversite of budgets to purchase, upgrade and improve emergency care equipment, support data collection, audits and data analysis as part of quality improvement and incident reviews.
Each week in Jamie's role is never the same, Jamie works across a number of sites so may be asked to travel and deliver training activities on site or in head office's training centre.
On weeks where Jamie is facilitating induction training this will take up the entirety of his week in delivery, there is however significant preparation time that goes into facilitating training and a week's induction may also involve up to 10 hours of prep time. Induction programmes can be as large as groups of 35 new starters across the organisation, so this requires excellent organisational skills as well as a level of confidence to teach skills to a large number of people – in different job roles, learning needs, all with different levels of prior knowledge and experience.
Typical First Aid or ILS sessions may take a day, again teaching to a variety of staff and backgrounds.
Jamie also has a leading role in the delivery of Management of Actual or Potential Aggression Training, seeing him deliver over 1000 hours of this course to help staff better understand service user aggression and steps they can take to mitigate or limit the risks, consulting and supporting units with care planning and more tailored support to individuals with complex behavioural problems.
Jamie is also involved with the full development cycle of new course materials, from the design of a new curriculum through to promotion and eventually delivery and evaluation of new courses.
Existing training packages require continuous development and refreshers, in order to keep in line with changes of legislation and best practice. It is a pivotal part of Rushcliffe Care Group to have staff trained to a competent level to ensure the best possible outcomes for residents.
