Aberdare Hospital is located in the Cynnon Valley area of Wales. It lies between River Dare and Cynon. Aberdare is 4 miles South West of Merthyr Tydfil and 22 miles east north east of Swansea. Aberdare is a popular tourist destination. Aberdare has a large selection of shops, with many high street chain stores. Aberdare sits just outside the Brecon Beacons National Park which offers an incredible range of outdoor leisure activities.
Aberdare Hospital is a 10 bedded locked rehabilitation hospital. Facilities on site include; en-suite bedrooms, arts and crafts room, games room, computer room and educational room with computer and books. Rushcliffe Aberdare provides good community links offering patients opportunity to access GP and other health services, to study at colleges, work experience and general social inclusion. Patients are given the opportunity to improve on their independence and to acquire new skills to be reintegrated back into the community. Individual and collaborative timetables are developed with patients and family involvement, with psychological therapies offered to all patients.

We put our patients at the heart of everything we do and all clinical, social, occupational and psychological treatment is designed in equal partnership with the individual. Our objective is to enable rehabilitation to be delivered in an environment which is least restrictive and encompassing relational security standards
Our Services
On admission to Rushcliffe, our Substance Misuse team will complete an in-depth assessment to establish historical and current use of alcohol and substance misuse.Following assessment, the individual would be offered the following treatment options:.
- In house relapse prevention & educational sessions,
- Relapse prevention medication/substitute prescribing
- Harm minimisation approach.
- The team also have good links with external drug and alcohol services.
Aberdare Hospital is a 10 bedded locked rehabilitation unit for males between the age of 18 and 65 who have:
- A primary diagnosis of mental illness or personality disorder and would benefit treatment offered within a locked rehabilitation service.
- Mental health illness that coexists with learning disabilities, ASD, challenging behaviour and/ or substance misuse.
- Disengaged and failed to maintain contact with treatment services in the past.
- Goals to live independently in the community and would benefit from support from rehabilitation services to prepare them for this.
Exclusions
- Patients with an acute drug and/or alcohol misuse problem.
- Individuals with a primary diagnosis of Dementia.
- Individuals with a primary diagnosis of Learning Disability.
